Whether you are doing a planned observation, or you decide to do a spontaneous observation, you will need some essentials. An intentional teacher is a prepared teacher, and here are a few things you will need:

    1. Something to write on – paper, sticky notes, color coded index cards, clipboard, notebook
    2. Something to write with – colored ink pens, sharpie markers
    3. Something to record with – photo camera, video camera, tape recorder, printer
    4. Something to store your documentation in – a filing cabinet, accordion file folder, portfolio
    5. Blank observation tool templates – checklists, frequency counts, ABC, anecdotal notes
    6. Some extras – tape, stickers, paper clips, stapler, batteries, dictionary
