    Professional Development Activities

    I. With one or two other peers, write one short-term lesson plan objective for each of the six cognitive levels. Make sure that your objectives: are written toward the student whom you will be teaching; contain the three components (conditions, behavior (s), and minimal standards); are clear, specific, and quantitative. When you finish, your instructor may want representatives from each group to put an objective on the chalkboard by category (e.g. Knowledge, Comprehension, etc.) for class discussion. This will not only enhance your objective-writing skills, but it will give you a better understanding of other academic areas.

    II. Respond to the following objectives with:

    A. All three components are present;

    B. The conditions are missing;

    C. The observable behavior is missing;

    D. The minimal standards of performance are missing.

    Only one answer per item. Do not respond with D if there is no observable behavior.

    _____1. As a class assignment, the student will write a summary of the first chapter of their earth

    science text.

    _____2. From memory, the student will list the first five Presidents of the U.S. in sequence

    A. Knowledge

    B. Comprehension

    C. Application

    D. Analysis

    E. Synthesis

    F. Evaluation

    _____1. With a tape measure, the student measures the perimeter of the classroom within a one-inch margin of error.

    _____2. The student counts from one to ten within two attempts.

    _____3. The student gives two oral reasons supporting his pro-life or pro-choice position.

    3. A. All components are present: conditions (“As a written exercise”), behavior (“solve”), and minimal standards (“at least three of four”).

    4. C. “Evaluate” is not an observable behavior.

    5. B. There are no conditions. “In sequence” is a minimal standard.

    III.

    1. C. The student is taking information that has been acquired and comprehended, and she is using

    it in a concrete situation.

    2. A. The student is engaging in the recitation of memorized material.

    3. F. The student is making a value judgement on the basis of his personal, predetermined criteria.
