Sexual health is associated with happiness, longevity and well-being. Frequency and enjoyment of sexual intercourse are significant predictors of longevity. Challenges with sexual functioning may be an indicator of organic or psychiatric disease. For example, taking a sexual history in a doctor visit could help in early diagnosis of diabetes or depression. Sexual abuse (current or past) that is not addressed can lead to depression, PTSD, obesity, substance abuse, suicide attempts, relationship issues, and challenges with sexual functioning.  Taking care of one’s sexual health involves taking care of our bodies.

Some tips on taking care of the vulva:

    • The vagina is self-cleaning- No douching or special wipes necessary
    • Warm water and a washcloth or your hand is sufficient
    • It is best to avoid scented products
    • If you are experiencing painful vaginal intercourse, speak to a healthcare professional. Don’t push through or ignore the pain.
