- Emergence of New Global Issues: The late 20th century saw the rise of new global challenges, including environmental degradation, human rights, and economic globalization. These issues broadened the scope of IR, leading scholars to explore how non-state actors, such as multinational corporations, non-governmental organizations, and terrorism influence international relations.
- End of the Cold War: The collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War in 1991 were pivotal events that reshaped the global order and had a significant impact on the study of IR. The transition from a bipolar world to a more multipolar international system prompted a rethinking of many of the assumptions that had guided the discipline during the Cold War era.
- Growth of Interdisciplinary Approaches: The increasing complexity of global issues led to the growth of interdisciplinary approaches within IR. Scholars began to incorporate insights from economics, sociology, environmental science, and other fields to better understand the multifaceted nature of international relations. This shift reflected the recognition that global issues often intersect with domestic politics, economics, and social dynamics.
