- Collective Security and NATO: One of the most prominent examples of liberalism in practice is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Established in 1949, NATO is a collective security alliance that embodies the liberal principle that states can enhance their security through cooperation and mutual defense. By pooling their resources and committing to defend each other, NATO members deter potential aggressors and promote stability in the Euro-Atlantic region.
- Economic Integration and the European Union: The European Union (EU) is another example of liberalism in action. The EU promotes economic integration and cooperation among its member states, reducing the likelihood of conflict through interdependence. The EU's single market, common currency (the euro), and numerous political institutions exemplify how liberal principles can be institutionalized to create a more peaceful and prosperous region.
- Democratic Promotion and Human Rights: Liberalism also emphasizes the importance of promoting democracy and human rights as a means of achieving peace and stability. The United States and other liberal democracies have often pursued policies aimed at spreading democratic governance and protecting human rights, believing that a world of democracies will be more peaceful and cooperative.
- International Norms and Humanitarian Interventions: Liberalism has also influenced the development of international norms and the practice of humanitarian intervention. The Responsibility to Protect (R2P) doctrine, for example, reflects liberal ideas about the international community's obligation to intervene when states commit gross human rights violations. While controversial, R2P and similar norms underscore liberalism's concern with individual rights and the protection of human life.
