Argentina’s claim to the islands and its desire to assert sovereignty clashed with British interests, leading to war.
- Economic Causes: Competition over resources, such as oil, minerals, or trade routes, frequently drives states into conflict. The Gulf War of 1990-1991, where Iraq invaded Kuwait, was driven largely by Iraq’s desire to control Kuwait’s vast oil reserves and reduce its own debt burden.
- Social and Cultural Causes: Ethnic and religious tensions often lead to violence. The Rwandan Genocide in 1994, though primarily an ethnic conflict between the Hutu and Tutsi groups, illustrates how deep social divisions can explode into large-scale violence.
