Global terrorism has fundamentally changed the landscape of war by introducing non-state actors who use asymmetric tactics to achieve political goals.
- Asymmetric Warfare: Unlike traditional state-based wars, terrorism involves smaller, less powerful groups using unconventional tactics, such as suicide bombings and hostage-taking, to destabilize more powerful states. Al-Qaeda’s attacks on the U.S. on September 11, 2001, exemplified how non-state actors could use terrorism to draw powerful states into prolonged conflicts.
- Global Impact of Terrorism: The rise of global terrorist networks like ISIS and Al-Qaeda has reshaped international security. These groups operate across borders, necessitating multinational efforts to combat them. The U.S.-led coalition against ISIS, involving countries from Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, demonstrates how terrorism has created a new form of global conflict.
