These rights are meant to protect individual dignity and prevent discrimination or abuse based on nationality, race, religion, or social standing. Throughout history, different cultures and societies have recognized various forms of rights, but the modern conception of universal human rights emerged post-World War II as a response to the atrocities of the war. This led to the establishment of the United Nations and the creation of documents that would set an international standard for human rights protection.
