First and foremost, it was created to help reduce the cost of higher education. Commercial textbooks can be prohibitively expensive, often placing unnecessary financial burdens on students. By offering this textbook freely through LibreTexts, we aim to remove that barrier and ensure that all students, regardless of financial background, have equal access to high-quality learning materials.
In addition to affordability, this textbook was designed to be flexible and adaptable. As an OER, it can be revised, expanded, and updated by instructors teaching the course to reflect evolving pedagogical goals, emerging research practices, or shifting course emphases. This adaptability allows the book to stay current with developments in research design and to better align with the specific learning outcomes of the ATU Department of Behavioral Sciences.
Another key reason for the creation of this book was the opportunity to develop a more comprehensive and useful resource than many of the existing textbooks on the market. Traditional texts often take a narrow view of research design or focus too heavily on one discipline. In contrast, this book brings together insights from multiple fields to offer a broader and more inclusive perspective on how research is conceptualized, designed, and carried out.
It is important to note that some chapters will approach research topics through the lens of specific disciplines, such as psychology or sociology. These disciplinary perspectives are intentional and are meant to illustrate how research design principles are applied in different contexts. However, the foundational concepts and skills taught in this book are not limited to any one field. Whether a student is pursuing a career in the natural sciences, social sciences, health sciences, or professional studies, the tools of research design are universally applicable.
