- Use the second and third search boxes to add more keywords. More keywords = fewer results.
- Use limiters on the left hand side to limit what you see.
- Change your keywords to more specific terms
If you have too few results:
- Check your spelling (this is the number one issue.
- Erase unnecessary keywords from the search bar ("and, of, the" as well as unnecessary larger words). Fewer keywords = more results.
- Beware of punctuation! "Quotation marks around phrases" are great. Commas, periods, colons, and semicolons are bad - they confuse databases.
- Change your keywords to broader terms.
- Remove limiters you may have added earlier in the search.
So how many results should you find?
Well, it really depends on what you are looking for. If you are searching for a specific book, one result is fine. But if you are looking for research on your topic, results lists with fewer than 5-10 results are frequently not big enough. However, you don't want too many - again your topic will dictate how many that is. Your patience will also play a factor, as you may tire of going through unrelated resources.
