    Chapter Summary

    This chapter examined the barriers that hinder effective intercultural communication, focusing on how ethnocentrism, stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, and systemic racism shape the ways individuals and groups interact. It began by exploring ethnocentrism—the tendency to view one’s own cultural norms as the standard—and showed how this mindset distorts perception and fuels harmful stereotypes. The chapter also highlighted how seemingly neutral tools, such as world maps, can reinforce cultural bias, contrasting the Eurocentric Mercator projection with the more equitable Gall‑Peters map.

    Building on this foundation, the chapter distinguished prejudice from discrimination, emphasizing that prejudice is an attitude while discrimination is an action. Students learned how microaggressions, media portrayals, and institutional practices contribute to unequal treatment across social groups. The chapter also revealed how privilege and cultural assumptions shape everyday interactions, often in ways that disadvantage marginalized communities.

    The discussion then turned to racism and privilege, addressing the realities of systemic racism in the United States, including police violence against African-Americans and the heightened inequities exposed during the COVID‑19 pandemic. The chapter defined both individual and institutional racism and introduced the concept of white privilege, encouraging students to reflect on how unearned advantages and structural barriers shape lived experiences.

    The chapter concluded with a Toolkit for Responding to Barriers in Communication, offering practical strategies for recognizing bias, interrupting harmful patterns, and engaging in conversations about identity and inequality with greater awareness and responsibility. Together, these sections underscore that intercultural communication requires not only skill but also a commitment to equity, empathy, and social understanding.
