Submitting: a text entry box, or a website url, or a media recording, or a file upload

    Points: 40

    Objectives

The goal of this assignment is threefold:

    1. Design and create an artifact containing creative commons and public domain remixed content
    2. Analyze how digital communication illustrates strategic communication practices through digital narrative construction
    3. Identify and define issues specific to legal and ethical concerns regarding digital communication

    About this Assignment

Lawrence Lessig (2008) identified a trend in digital communication processes that he describes as remix culture. This can be defined as a type of society that encourages derivative or "remixed" works based on existing materials. Lessig promoted this idea, but recognized that copyright law as it currently exists would provide challenges to the legality of remixing works and potentially jeopardize the ability for ideas to develop freely in digital communication. To address this challenge, he founded the Creative Commons, an initiative designed to invite contributions from writers, photographers, video creators, artists, and other producers of material to license and provide those materials freely, and with the ability to reuse the materials without the restrictions associated with copyright standards.

Creative Commons materials, as well as materials in the public domain, which are materials not protected by copyright and intellectual property laws, can be freely used to create and produce materials for public consumption.

    Step by Step Instructions

    1. For this assignment, each student will create a digital product (video, PowerPoint, newsletter, or website) that remixes Creative Commons and Public Domain materials to explain a concept from the module.
    2. You may choose any theory or concept from module 9.
    3. Define the concept or term, in your own words.
    4. Then choose images, video clips, music, written content, and other materials that hold Creative Commons licenses or are in the Public Domain that will help you illustrate that concept in a creative fashion.
    5. As the last step please double check all materials are, in fact, Creative Commons or Public Domain. No other alternatives will be accepted.

    Don't Forget

    • Don't forget to cite and reference properly in citation format and/or using the Creative Commons attribution style with hyperlinks, citing both the module pages and additional sources you use or reference. Part of your grade will be based on whether you can illustrate where you got the media you are remixing.
    • Reflect and think about how the concepts and theories in this module related to your life and experiences.
    • Think about these assignments as application exercises reflecting the module materials.
