Unlike standard marriages, covenant marriages require couples to undergo pre-marital counseling and accept more limited grounds for divorce, often emphasizing lifelong commitment and the resolution of marital difficulties through counseling rather than dissolution (Cherlin, 2020). Proponents argue that covenant marriage strengthens the marital bond, reduces divorce rates, and encourages spouses to take a more serious and intentional approach to their relationship. Critics note that it may be less appealing to couples who value flexibility or who face circumstances—such as abuse or irreconcilable differences—that make legal barriers to divorce potentially harmful.
