1. Use this Docket Search link (and do your own research), to identify, describe, and review three (3) DEI related cases the US Supreme Court ruled on last term (October 2024-June 2025).
Do you agree with the court's decisions? Briefly explain why or why not, in light of civil rights and democracy.
2. Then choose three (3) cases from the upcoming term (October 2025-June 2026) even if they have not been heard or ruled on. How should they be decided in your opinion, or if already decided, do you agree with the court?
Requirements
- Read the assignment instructions carefully and do the necessary research.
- Ground your opinion in the readings and media.
- Write at least 400 words
- Respond to the posts of TWO of your peers. Responses to peers should raise significant points of agreement and/or disagreement, and encourage peers to reflect upon their responses and positions taken in their initial posts.
- If you can, please respond to any questions from other students regarding your postings (this is not mandatory).
Evaluation Rubric
1. Content & Research (40 points)
- Thoroughness (20 pts):
- Did the student identify and describe three past cases (2024-2025 term) accurately?
- Did they select and analyze three upcoming cases (2025-2026 term) with clear reasoning?
- Research Depth (20 pts):
- Are sources (SCOTUS docket, news articles, legal analyses) properly referenced?
- Does the response demonstrate understanding of DEI legal debates?
2. Critical Analysis & Argumentation (30 points)
- Legal & Democratic Implications (15 pts):
- Does the student provide a well-reasoned opinion on past rulings (agree/disagree) with civil rights and democracy in mind?
- Forward-Looking Perspective (15 pts):
- For upcoming cases, does the student propose a justified stance on how they should be decided?
3. Peer Engagement (20 points)
- Response Quality (10 pts per peer reply, 20 pts total):
- Did the student engage meaningfully with two peers (50+ words each)?
- Do responses raise substantive points (agreement/disagreement) and encourage reflection?
4. Writing & Mechanics (10 points)
- Clarity & Structure (5 pts):
- Is the post well-organized (clear intro, case summaries, analysis, conclusion)?
- Grammar & Style (5 pts):
- Is the writing free of errors and academically appropriate?
