    Mapping Global Interconnectedness

Infographic illustrating global interconnections, featuring maps, icons, and text on interactions and influence across regions.

Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\) The infographic, titled “Global Interconnectedness Map: A Summary Visual,” presents the book as a connected journey through twelve chapters organized into four major phases. Rather than showing the chapters as isolated topics, the design links them with glowing lines and pathways to emphasize that global issues overlap, interact, and continually shape one another.

The first phase, Foundations of a Connected World, introduces the basic frameworks for understanding globalization. Chapter 1, “Plugged In,” focuses on interconnectedness and the relationship between local and global forces, using intrapersonal, interpersonal, institutional, and cultural lenses to analyze how individuals and systems are linked. Chapter 2, “Rules of the Game,” turns to global governance and citizenship, comparing formal institutions such as the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, and World Trade Organization with informal systems of influence, inequality, and global civic responsibility.

The second phase, Global Challenges and Crises, examines major pressures facing the contemporary world. Chapter 3, “Planet SOS,” addresses climate change, sustainability, climate justice, the Paris Agreement, grassroots action, and the three pillars of sustainability. Chapter 4, “Power to the People,” explores democracy, peace, and justice, including democratic backsliding, intersectionality, technology, and activism. Chapter 5, “Ctrl + Rights,” shifts to technology and human freedom, focusing on surveillance, the tension between security and liberty, artificial intelligence ethics, and the digital divide.

The third phase, Human Systems in Motion, examines how people, resources, and conflicts move through global systems. Chapter 6, “Hangry?” focuses on food and international relations, including global food systems, the tension between food security and food sovereignty, and malnutrition. Chapter 7, “Global Mobility,” examines migration, labor, education, trafficking, global care chains, and theories that explain why people move. Chapter 8, “Global Hotspots,” considers conflict, crisis, and cooperation through cases such as Ukraine, Gaza, and the Sahel, while also addressing Indigenous frontiers, multipolarity, and the changing nature of global power.

The fourth phase, Culture, Consumption, and Change, turns to the ways globalization is experienced through travel, giving, media, and cultural exchange. Chapter 9, “Like and Share,” explores tourism, dark tourism, social media, the tourist gaze, overtourism, the ethics of visiting sites of tragedy, and regenerative travel. Chapter 10, “Philanthropy Unpacked,” examines philanthropy and the social sector through issues such as philanthrocapitalism, democratic legitimacy, ethical giving, and neo-colonial dynamics. Chapter 11, “Globalization of Culture,” looks at food, fashion, and music, emphasizing cultural soft power, ethical consumption, and the tension between cultural appreciation and appropriation.

The final chapter, Chapter 12: Conclusion, brings the themes together through the image of Earth as a spaceship. The phrase “It’s not a village, but a spaceship” reinforces the book’s central argument that people and systems are deeply interdependent and share common risks, resources, and responsibilities. The chapter emphasizes synthesis, collective responsibility, interdependence, and the need to understand global issues as connected rather than separate.

Overall, the visual presents the book as a map of global interconnectedness. Each chapter adds another layer to the larger system, moving from foundational concepts to global crises, human mobility, culture, consumption, and finally collective responsibility. The connecting lines reinforce the idea that climate, governance, technology, food, migration, conflict, tourism, philanthropy, and culture do not operate independently; they continually influence one another within a shared global system.
