Understanding Indigenous Americans requires more than learning historical facts; it asks us to rethink how the United States itself was formed and whose voices have been centered or silenced along the way. Indigenous nations are not only part of the past; they are living, diverse, and resilient communities whose cultures, political systems, and struggles continue into the present.

Throughout this chapter, we see how colonization, land loss, and broken treaties created long-lasting inequalities, but we also see powerful examples of resistance, cultural survival, and self-determination. Indigenous peoples have continuously adapted, organized, and fought to protect their lands, identities, and future generations despite immense barriers.

As students and members of society, engaging with Indigenous histories and contemporary issues encourages us to think critically about justice, power, and responsibility. Recognizing Indigenous sovereignty and lived experiences helps build a more honest understanding of the United States and opens space for respect, accountability, and meaningful social change moving forward.
