This chapter asks us to look closely at something that is often left unexamined: whiteness and white privilege/ Because whiteness is frequently treated as “normal” or invisible in U.S. society, it can be difficult to recognize how power, advantage, and inequality are built into everyday systems and institutions. Understanding whiteness is not about blaming individuals—it is about understanding how history, policy, and social structures continue to shape opportunities and outcomes today.
For many students, these topics may feel uncomfortable, confusing, or even personal. That discomfort is not a sign that you are doing something wrong; it often means you are learning something new that challenges familiar ways of thinking. Sociology and ethnic studies encourage us to sit with that discomfort and ask deeper questions about how race operates beyond individual intentions or beliefs.
As community college students, you bring diverse lived experiences, identities, and perspectives into this conversation. Your experiences matter. This chapter invites you to connect what you have learned to your own observations—at school, at work, in media, and in your communities. By recognizing how systems of privilege and inequality function, you gain tools to better understand social relationships, institutional power, and the possibilities for social change.
Ultimately, learning about whiteness is part of a larger goal: building a more equitable and informed society. Awareness is the first step toward change. By understanding these concepts, you are better equipped to engage thoughtfully with others, challenge unfair systems, and imagine more just futures—for yourselves and for the communities you are part of.
