Theories in Action
Theories behave beautifully when they are sitting quietly in separate textbook paragraphs. The world is less cooperative. Most global problems can be interpreted through several theories at once, and the challenge is not to guess which theory the textbook author secretly had in mind, but to decide which framework reveals something useful and what remains hidden when we rely upon it.
Case 1: The $8 T-Shirt
Imagine a shirt designed by a company headquartered in one country, made with cotton grown somewhere else, sewn in another country, advertised through social media, transported across an ocean, purchased cheaply, worn a few times, and eventually discarded.
- A World-Systems approach might ask where the high-value and low-value stages of production occur.
- A Critical Global Political Economy approach might examine wages, regulation, corporate ownership, taxation, and profits.
- A Postcolonial approach might ask whether the geography of contemporary textile production reflects older histories of colonial extraction, plantation agriculture, industrialization, or unequal trade.
- A Systems Thinking approach might connect fashion consumption to labor, water use, chemical pollution, transportation, climate, and waste.
Which theory gives you the strongest explanation? What becomes visible when you combine several?
Case 2: K-Pop Goes Everywhere
South Korea's popular-music industry has developed substantial audiences across borders through entertainment companies, social media, streaming services, highly organized fandoms, and transnational cultural networks (Jin, 2016). Does this challenge older claims that cultural globalization primarily moves outward from the United States?
- A Cultural Imperialism approach might investigate who controls the streaming platforms and distribution infrastructure.
- A Globalization Theory approach might ask whether K-pop reflects hyperglobalization or a more complicated transformation of global culture.
- A Political Economy approach could examine entertainment companies, intellectual property, contracts, and profits.
- A cultural approach might emphasize hybridization: musical forms crossing borders, interacting with other traditions, and returning in altered forms.
So is K-pop cultural globalization? National soft power? Corporate strategy? Or Cultural hybridity?
Possibly all of them.
Case 3: A Pacific Island and a Changing Climate
Many small island states have contributed relatively little to historic global greenhouse-gas emissions while facing substantial risks associated with sea-level rise, extreme weather, water insecurity, and other climate-related changes (IPCC, 2022). Systems Thinking connects energy use, climate, migration, economics, sovereignty, food systems, and international law. Critical Political Economy asks which economies benefited most from carbon-intensive industrial development. Postcolonial Theory may help explain why states with small populations often possess far less political and economic power than the countries whose historical emissions have contributed most to contemporary climate change. The difficult question becomes: What does “shared global responsibility” mean when responsibility has never been shared equally?
Case 4: Your Phone
Take out your phone. Choose any three theories from this chapter. Apply each one. If three theories produce three different stories about the same device, congratulations. That is exactly the point.
The Catch
Theory should make reality more understandable, not force reality to behave. If your evidence does not fit the theory perfectly, don't twist the evidence until it does. Ask instead: What does this theory explain well? Where does it struggle? Would another framework help? That is analysis.
