    This customized Open Educational Resource (OER) textbook is an updated and revised hybrid of two existing OER textbooks:

    Social Problems: Continuity and Change by Anonymous [name redacted] (2010) offers a realistic but motivating look at the many issues that are facing our society today. As the subtitle implies, social problems are persistent but they have also improved in the past and can be improved in the present and future, provided that our nation has the wisdom and will to address them.

    Inequality and Interdependence: Social Problems and Social Justice by Kimberly Puttman, Kathryn Burrows, Patricia Halleran, Bethany Grace Howe, Nora Karena, Kelly Szott, and Avery Temple (2025) is a powerful book that explores the social problems that you and other students may face by integrating powerful theories, current data, and compelling stories from people of color, women and nonbinary people, poor people, queer people, people of different abilities, immigrants, and many others who experience injustice.

    Dr. Pain sincerely appreciates the authors named above for their hard work in constructing their OER textbooks, for making the current textbook possible, and especially for their dedication to social justice for their students. 

    The current textbook was remixed and revised by Dr. Pain with additional revisions by Dr. Henderson at Grand Rapids Community College during the Fall 2025 semester. Dr. Pain plans to to continually revise and update the text such that data will remain current, more features will be made available, and the textbook will continue to improve. 

    Suggestions are welcome from students and educators for in-text content or highlight boxes (e.g., Personal or Community Profile, Applying Social Research, People Making a Difference).
