    Religious Affiliation Over Time

According to a Pew Research Center 2023 survey (see Figure 8.6.1), although Catholics remain the largest religious group among U.S. Latin@ adults, their percentage has dropped from 67% to 43% since 2010.  Following the trend among the majority of Americans, the percentage of U.S. Latin@ adults who identify as “Unaffiliated” has tripled since 2010 (from 10% to 30%) and is now similar to all U.S. adults.

These trends are more even more pronounced among young U.S. adults (see Figure 8.6.2). For example, nearly half (49%) of 18-29 year olds are religiously unaffiliated.  Not surprisingly, U.S. born and English-dominant Latinos are much more likely to identify themselves as religiously unaffiliated. Although the percentage of Protestants has remained relatively stable, Catholicism has seen the greatest decrease.  Not surprisingly, nearly one quarter (23%) of adult U.S. Latinos are former Catholics (see Figure 8.6.3).
