    Getting Better Output by Asking Better Questions

    Prompt engineering may sound technical, but it’s really just a fancy way of saying: "How can I ask this in a way the AI understands?"
    It’s the process of refining your input—your prompt—to get clearer, more useful, and more accurate responses from an AI tool.

    As with teaching or writing, clarity matters. The more specific and structured your prompt, the better your chances of getting something usable in return.


    🎯 What Is Prompt Refinement?

    Prompt refinement is the practice of:

    • Adding context (who it’s for, what level, what purpose)
    • Being clear about format (bullet points, paragraph, quiz)
    • Giving examples or constraints (length, tone, vocabulary)

    It’s not about “tricking” the AI. It’s about helping it do what you really mean.


    🧠 Before vs. After Example

    Prompt (Before):

    “Write an assignment.”

    Prompt (Refined):

    “Draft a 250-word assignment for a second-year college course in sociology. The topic should explore how social media influences group behavior. Include clear instructions and one discussion question.”

    Result:
    Much more tailored, relevant, and useful.


    🔁 Think Iteratively

    Prompting is rarely one-and-done. Try this loop:

    1. Ask your first version of the prompt
    2. Read what the AI gives you
    3. Refine by clarifying or narrowing the task
    4. Repeat if needed

    ✍️ Common Prompt Refinement Starters

    • “Make this more student-friendly.”
    • “Add a real-world example.”
    • “Explain it in 3 bullet points.”
    • “Rewrite for an ESL learner at intermediate level.”
    • “Change this to fit an online discussion activity.”

    🎓 Why It Matters for Instructors

    • Helps you get better support from AI tools without wasting time
    • Makes AI outputs more aligned with your teaching goals
    • Models strong critical thinking for students learning to use AI ethically
