    Not all AI tools are created equal—and not every tool is right for your course. Before adopting new AI technology, it’s important to evaluate it through the lens of ethics, equity, accessibility, and instructional value. These questions help you make informed, student-centered decisions.

    🔍 Core Evaluation Questions
    Ask yourself:

    • What problem does this tool solve?
      Does it meaningfully support learning, save time, or improve access?

    • Is it accessible?
      Can students using screen readers, captions, or assistive devices use it effectively?

    • Is it private and secure?
      What data does the tool collect? Is student information protected and FERPA-compliant?

    • Does it align with my course goals and pedagogy?
      Is this tool enhancing instruction—or just adding novelty?

    • Is it inclusive?
      Does it reflect diverse perspectives, languages, and learning needs?

    • What are the risks?
      Could this tool unintentionally introduce bias, misinformation, or inequity?

    • Can students opt out?
      Are alternatives or accommodations available for students who prefer not to engage with AI?

    • Is it approved or supported by my institution?
      Has this tool been vetted by IT, accessibility, or academic affairs?

    Evaluating AI tools thoughtfully ensures that technology serves your students—not the other way around. By asking the right questions up front, instructors can avoid unintended consequences, uphold ethical standards, and make intentional choices that reflect the values of inclusive, effective teaching.
