    There are many strategies educators and families can use to help children learn language and literacy skills. Throughout this text, we will share strategies for teachers to help children develop literacy skills for the different components of literacy. In this chapter, we will review some very simple strategies to help children develop one of the earliest skills of literacy and that is oral language. Using these strategies will also help children develop knowledge and skills in other early literacy skills as well.

    Every Child Ready to Read

    The Every Child Ready to Read (ECRR) Program was developed through the joint collaboration of the Public Library Association (PLA) and ALSC Association for Library Service to Children). They developed the ECRR Program to help assist librarians in educating and empowering parents in helping their children become ready to read. Although these strategies are designed to help parents with developing emergent literacy skills in their children, they will also be useful to early childhood educators in their work with emergent readers and writers.

    Five Early Literacy Practices

    The Five Early Literacy Practices are the very things we do with children every day.

    1. Talk
    2. Read
    3. Write
    4. Sing
    5. Play
