    Learning Objectives

    By the end of this section, you should be able to:

    • Define curriculum in the context of early childhood education, highlighting its role in guiding teaching practices and shaping children's learning experiences.

    The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) defines curriculum as an organized framework of content intended for children to learn, the processes by which children will use to achieve curricular goals, what professionals will do to help children achieve those goals, and the context in which teaching and learning occur (NAEYC, 2003; Bredekamp & Rosegrant, 1995). Breaking this down, it is "the "what" and "how" of the learning experiences children will have" (Fonseca & PDG, 2016).

    Curriculum in early childhood focuses on teaching to the whole child and incorporates learning in all areas of development. Some programs may rely on readily available or commercial packages, some programs create their own curriculum, others allow the curriculum to emerge from children's interests and many programs have a blend of the former.
