    Learning Objectives

    By the end of this section, you should be able to:

    • Explain the concept of an integrated curriculum and how it connects different subject areas (e.g., language, math, science) to promote holistic learning experiences for young children.
    • Describe how themes can be used to organize and enrich an integrated curriculum, fostering deeper engagement and learning across multiple domains.

    It is common for many programs to integrate many aspects of learning with the use of themes as a way to weave learning together for children. For some learners, the connection of several learning experiences all related to a common concept can support deeper learning. The most successful themes are those that emerge out of the children’s interest (often called emergent curriculum ). Common themes include:

    • My family
    • Friendship and caring
    • Community Helpers
    • Animals
    • Activities (camping, …)
    • Transportation
    • Locations (oceans, mountains, farms,…)

    Theme considerations should be that of what is most tangible and understandable to children and the community in which they live. For example, children living on a farm in Kansas, are not going to relate as much to the ocean as children living in a coastal state.

    What other themes can you think of that would be appropriate for children in your preferred future setting?

    Often when planning a theme, professionals will use the concept of a curriculum web to begin to plan their ideas. Like a list, but in a different format, a web allows teachers to brainstorm related ideas and then choose the ones that make the most sense to more thoroughly develop and plan. This process uses both a professional’s divergent and convergent thinking skills.
