Body awareness, or the ability to recognize and understand one's own body in relation to its surroundings, develops significantly during early childhood. A crucial component of body awareness is proprioception, the sense of body position and movement, which is facilitated by sensory receptors in muscles, joints, and ligaments. Proprioception enables children to navigate their environment and control their movements, allowing them to perform activities such as running without looking at their feet or reaching for an object without direct visual guidance (Gallahue & Donnelly, 2019).
Proprioceptive feedback is crucial for motor development and coordination, as it enables children to adjust their movements in response to internal sensory information. This feedback helps with tasks ranging from climbing and jumping to writing and drawing. A well-developed proprioceptive system supports independence and confidence in physical activities, reducing the likelihood of clumsiness or movement-related anxiety (Levine & Munsch, 2024). How can we support this? Engaging children in activities that promote body awareness- dancing, yoga, active play, and simple games such as "Hokey-Pokey" or "Red Light-Green Light"- helps them develop a strong connection between their minds and bodies. Providing a supportive environment where children can explore movement freely contributes to both their physical confidence and overall well-being (Santrock, 2021).

During this period, children also begin to form an early sense of body image. Their perceptions of their bodies are influenced by their own experiences, feedback from caregivers, and cultural norms. Positive reinforcement and opportunities for active play support a healthy body image, fostering confidence in their physical abilities. Conversely, negative comments or unrealistic societal standards may contribute to body dissatisfaction even at a young age (Levine & Munsch, 2024).
