    PRACTICAL EXERCISE

Objective. The objective of all practice exercises is to give the student the opportunity to demonstrate that he has mastered the principles discussed in the course. In this exercise, you will be role playing with a partner. Your instructor may assign a scenario, or your instructor may allow your to choose a scenario or your instructor may also give you the option of creating your own scenario.

Scenario 1 – Bratty Kids in Restaurant

You and your sweetheart/spouse are out for a romantic evening at a nice restaurant. The hostess seats you and then seats a family of four with two children who are running all around the restaurant, crawling under tables, screaming, etc., and in one instance, nearly trip a waiter with a tray of hot food. That was the last straw. You’ve had enough. You decide to go talk to the parents and to convince them to control their bratty kids.

    Scenario 2 – A Lemon of a Car

You buy a used car, and it’s barely off the dealer’s lot before it starts giving you problems. You have some repairs made. Finally, you’re on your way to class on I-95 when the engine seizes and dies in the middle lane as cars whiz by at 80 mph. You have it towed to the used car dealer from who you bought it and tell him you want your money back. He points you to a fine-print clause in the contract that says, “All sales are final. All cars are sold As Is, with Warranty.” You think that’s unjust and you want your money back.

Your mission in talking with the dealer is to get him to refund your money.

Scenario 3 – Little League Coach

Your child is on a Little League softball team. The coach has had significant success in the past, and has taken the team to the state finals twice in the last five years. He has a reputation for building a winning team while creating a fun-filled atmosphere on the team. This year, however, his personality seems to have changed. He has become a bit of a tyrant, verbally abusing the kids. Many, including your son, want to quit. The parents got together and appointed you to go talk to the coach to convince him to change the way he interacts with the team.

Your mission is to get the coach to change back to the winning personality he showed in previous years. Did we say there are rumors he’s being considered for a minor league coaching position?
