The best way to understand how a persuasive interview works is to participate in one. Consider how you might approach the following situations:

    • You are an employee requesting a raise based on performance despite very few people in the organization receiving raises this year due to budget cuts.
    • As the new owner of a business/franchise that lost many of its long-time customers due to poor service and mismanagement, you are now calling these customers and trying to persuade them to do business with your company.
    • Mental health services on campus lack funding and many students are waiting weeks to be seen by a counselor. As a student government representative, you have been tasked with meeting with the college president and provost to seek more funding.

In these scenarios, preparation may involve developing a list of questions but it is more likely that you will need to understand your interviewees’ needs, anticipate their hesitations, and strategize your persuasive approach. Above all, remember that persuasion must be done ethically and without manipulation.
