When considering your use of filler words, you might assume: “Eliminating fillers totally is very difficult.” and even think: “I don’t even realize I’m using fillers.” We should all say, “I want to decrease or totally eliminate fillers from my vocabulary.” It can be done with dedication and lots of practice. You must be patient with yourself when realizing you are using fillers in general or

using fillers way too much. Using a filler or two may go undetected. However, using too many can negatively impact your personal and professional relationships.

Record a conversation and count the use of unnecessary pauses and filler words in relation to the other words in the speech. See if you can reduce the ratio over time. Remember that as you become more confident and familiar with speaking it will be easier to reduce the frequency of many of the unnecessary filler words and pauses.(14)

Be patient with yourself and practice.
