    Consider the following.

Abstract images showing power distance.POWER DISTANCE (PDI)

How hierarchy, authority, and artistic leadership expectations collide.

Japanese Theater Troupe & U.S. Guest Director

The director encouraged actors to challenge blocking choices. Actors, used to strict hierarchy, stayed silent. The director misread this as lack of creativity until a cultural mediator explained the norm.

Indian Classical Dance School & British Arts Council

The council wanted student feedback on teaching quality. Students refused to critique their guru. The council revised its evaluation process to respect hierarchical traditions.

South African Choir & Swedish Conductor

The conductor used egalitarian rehearsal methods. Singers expected clear top‑down direction. Confusion eased after the conductor adopted more structured leadership.

Chinese Opera Company & Australian Stage Manager

Stage manager expected actors to report issues directly. Actors believed only senior performers should speak to management. A communication protocol clarified channels.

Nigerian Film Crew & French Producer

Crew deferred to the director for all decisions. Producer expected department heads to act autonomously. Production slowed until authority lines were renegotiated.

    INDIVIDUALISM vs. COLLECTIVISM (IDV)

Conflicts around ensemble identity, personal recognition, and group harmony.

U.S. Jazz Ensemble & Korean Pianist

American musicians took extended solos. The pianist prioritized blending with the group. Misunderstandings eased after discussing cultural expectations around improvisation.

Mexican Folklórico Troupe & Canadian Festival Organizers

Organizers wanted to highlight individual dancers. The troupe insisted on collective credit. Promotional materials were redesigned to honor the group.

Chinese Ballet Company & American Choreographer

Choreographer praised standout dancers publicly. Dancers felt singled out and embarrassed. Feedback shifted to private sessions.

Indonesian Gamelan Group & Dutch Music Students

Dutch students asked for individual practice time. Gamelan musicians emphasized group rehearsal. A hybrid schedule balanced both needs.

Samoan Theatre Collective & New Zealand Grant Committee

Committee required a single “lead artist.” The collective insisted decisions were communal. The grant was revised to allow co‑leadership.

    MASCULINITY vs. FEMININITY (MAS)

Conflicts around competitiveness, modesty, emotional expression, and gender norms.

Argentine Tango School & Finnish Dance Therapist

Tango instructors emphasized intensity and dominance. Therapist emphasized emotional balance and mutuality. A blended teaching model emerged.

Middle Eastern Music Ensemble & Scandinavian Festival Staff

Male musicians resisted being directed by a female stage manager. Staff saw this as sexist; musicians saw it as cultural propriety. A male assistant helped bridge communication.

U.S. Acting Conservatory & Japanese Exchange Students

Conservatory pushed emotional vulnerability and self‑exposure. Students preferred restraint and subtlety. Acting exercises were adapted to respect both styles.

Brazilian Drumline & German Technical Director

Drummers used expressive, improvisational energy. Director demanded precision and uniformity. A rehearsal structure allowed both creativity and discipline.

South African Dance Crew & Dutch Documentary Team

Crew emphasized competition and “battles.” Dutch filmmakers emphasized cooperation and shared storytelling. The documentary reframed battles as cultural expression rather than aggression.

    UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE (UAI)

Conflicts around structure, improvisation, risk, and rehearsal expectations.

Greek Symphony Orchestra & American Guest Conductor

Musicians wanted detailed rehearsal plans. Conductor preferred spontaneous adjustments. A written schedule reduced anxiety.

Japanese Noh Theatre & Kenyan Cultural Exchange Group

Noh performers followed strict ritualized forms. Kenyan artists improvised freely. Joint workshops helped each group understand the other’s artistic logic.

French Contemporary Dance Company & Brazilian Lighting Designer

Company required precise cues. Designer preferred flexible, mood‑based lighting. A cue‑plus‑improv system resolved the conflict.

German Opera House & Spanish Costume Team

German staff insisted on strict deadlines. Spanish team worked fluidly and adaptively. Deadlines were restructured into phases with built‑in flexibility.

Portuguese Community Theater & British Director

Actors wanted predictable rehearsal routines. Director used experimental, unpredictable exercises. A compromise alternated structured and exploratory sessions.
