7.1: The Intimate Mosaic- Marriage, Family, and Kinship Across Racial and Ethnic Lines

The family is often popularly imagined as a private haven, a universal institution governed by natural, biological impulses. Sociology, in contrast, reveals the family as a primary social institution shaped by the public forces of history, economics, and politics. Nowhere is this more evident than in the examination of how family life, marriage patterns, and intimate relationships are structured by race and ethnicity in the United States. The “standard” family model—a nuclear, monogamous, male-breadwinner unit—is not a neutral benchmark but a specific ideal that has often been inaccessible or imposed upon vulnerable racial and ethnic communities (Coontz 1992).

This chapter introduces how family formations among Latino, Black, Asian, and Indigenous Americans are not cultural deficits or deviations, but strategic adaptations to historical and structural conditions. Using core sociological frameworks—structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism—we will analyze how racialized experiences have created distinct familial landscapes. We will explore the interplay between cultural heritage and structural constraints, investigating topics such as marriage markets, gendered roles within families, and the resilience of extended kinship networks. By moving beyond pathologizing stereotypes, we can understand how families of color have served as crucial buffers against racism and as key sites for preserving cultural identity and ensuring survival.
