8.1: Sacred Ties- The Intersection of Faith, Race, and Ethnicity in America

In the United States, the sacred and the social are inextricably linked. Sunday morning has been famously described as “the most segregated hour in American life,” a phrase attributed to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that underscores the profound connection between religious affiliation and racial-ethnic identity. This chapter introduces how, for racial and ethnic minorities, religion is far more than a set of theological beliefs; it is a dynamic social institution that has functioned as a tool for survival, a site of resistance, a source of cultural preservation, and a vehicle for political mobilization. While often reinforcing racial boundaries, religious communities also provide the resources to challenge them.

This complex terrain is examined through the distinct religious histories and sociological functions of faith within four major American ethno-racial groups: African Americans, Latino Americans, Asian Americans, and Indigenous Peoples. Drawing on sociological theories and data, we will analyze how the Black Church served as a “counterpublic sphere” during and after slavery; how Latinx Catholicism reflects a lived religion of mestizaje; how the incredible diversity of Asian American religions challenges simplistic narratives; and how Indigenous spiritualities are intrinsically tied to sovereignty and land. Through this analysis, we will see that belief is not merely a private matter but a public force, deeply woven into the American story of race, power, and identity.
