8.8: Latinx Religiosity- Mestizaje and Lived Faith

Latinx religious life is characterized by religious syncretism—the blending of different religious traditions—and a deep commitment to lived religion, which focuses on practice and experience over formal doctrine. This is a direct product of the historical mestizaje (racial and cultural mixing) of Spanish Catholicism and Indigenous American worldviews.

While a majority of Latinx identify as Catholic (55% as of 2022), their practice is often centered on religiosidad popular (popular religiosity) rather than institutional authority (Pew Research Center 2022). This includes home altars, devotion to saints, and community celebrations like quinceañeras and Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The veneration of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a quintessential example of syncretism; she is said to have appeared to an Indigenous man, depicted in this telling with mestiza features, becoming a powerful national and religious symbol of Mexico and for Latinx broadly (Elizondo 1997). She represents a faith that emerges from the borderlands, sanctifying the mixed identity of her people.

In addition to a Catholic devotion among Latinx, a major trend is the rapid growth of Protestantism, particularly within Pentecostal and evangelical traditions. Nearly one-in-four Latinx are now Protestant (Pew Research Center 2022). Scholars argue this shift is not just theological but sociological. These churches often offer a more intimate, emotionally expressive worship style that some would argue, resonates with cultural values of familismo and personalismo (value of personal relationships). They also provide strong community support networks and pathways to leadership, particularly for women, in contexts where immigrants may feel marginalized (Espinosa, Elizondo, and Miranda 2003).

Finally, Latinx communities also have traditions of hybrid beliefs and practices that are incorporated into more established religious traditions. Some practices derived from Espiritismo (Spiritism), Santería, and Curanderismo are woven into the fabric of Latinx spiritual life, often coexisting with Catholic or Protestant identities. This reflects a pragmatic and holistic approach to faith, where religion is called upon to address everyday problems of health, relationships, and fortune.
