    Learning Objectives
    • Explore how practicing self-care can be beneficial for counselors' physical and mental health during the graduate program and as a practicing counselor.

    It is no secret that graduate school is highly stressful and can have a negative impact on graduate students’ physical and mental health. As a professor, I have seen this happen many times. One of the first things I do during an introductory course I teach, is to ask how many students are currently engaged in a regular self-care practice. Without fail they look around the room guiltily and less than 10% respond positively. Some are not even sure what I mean. In my own college experience, I was introduced to self-care during my undergraduate experience and can attest to the fact that I had no awareness of self-care or any of the interventions I learned. I can also share that learning about the importance of self-care and wellness along with the various interventions changed my life. I also realized as a practicing counselor and then as a professor how valuable all that I had learned was in managing my stress.

    Research suggests that students who practice self-care experience more positive outcomes than those who do not. The outcomes are experienced in three primary areas with the greatest improvement in personal growth, especially as it relates to self-compassion, followed by psychological well-being which is evidenced by greater life satisfaction and decreases in psychological distress, and lastly stress reduction (Jiang et al., 2020). This is especially important given the rigors of graduate students attempting to complete a master’s program in counseling or any of the helping professions. The student is also required to manage their lives in a variety of contexts outside the classroom which may include family, work, and social obligations.
