Like anecdotal records, running records are observational, narrative documentation of a child. While anecdotal records are used more generally, running records begin with a purpose. The purposes of running records are varied, such as looking for a pattern, obsering for a developmental milestone, or even observing to understand a repeated behavior.
Here is a (fictional) example of a running record:

We would like to know why she is throwing the toys. 11:00 AM T.S. picks up a book, she looks at it and the pages fall open as she opens it. She licks it. She throws it. She looks at the book on the floor. She picks up a block by her. 11:05 AM T.S. picks up a stuffed animal sheep. She puts it into her mouth She pulls it out of her mouth. She looks at the sheep. She throws it onto the floor. 11:10 AM T.S. picks up an egg shaker. She shakes it around. K.F. crawls over to her. T.S. pulls the shaker away from K.F. K.F. reaches for it again and T.S. throws it at him. 11:15 AM T.S. is in the bouncer chewing on a teether. K.F. crawls up to T.S. He pulls her hair. She starts crying. He lets go. She throws the teether at him. He takes the teether. He crawls away. The teacher, H.A., sees him with the teether and takes it from him, reminding him that we do not take our friend's toys. |
Avoid:
Your record should not look like this: Tiffany is an angry baby, she likes to throw toys. She threw a block and then threw toys toys at another baby. When Kevin pulls her hair, she gets mad at him so she takes it out on him by throwing things @ him its sad to see that a baby can be this angry |
