One way to look at how librarians may already be encouraging school readiness skills during storytime is to use assessment systems developed for early childhood education classrooms. We chose the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) - PreK (Pianta, La Paro, & Hamre, 2008) because it focuses on a specific aspect of teaching also present in every storytime program: adult-child interactions. The CLASS focuses on the quality of interactions within three domains: emotional support, organization of the environment, and instructional support. As part of our study of how library storytimes can support school readiness, we used the CLASS to analyze the interactions between librarians and children in 68 storytime sessions across 35 libraries in Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio.
