    The following sections include ideas for improving how you select and discuss books related to the seven aspects of EDI we observed in our study: parallel populations; categories of books; gender; sexual identity; disabilities, developmental differences, and chronic illnesses; religion; and language (please refer to 2.1 What We Looked At for explanations of terms). Think about who attends your storytimes and who lives in your community. What mirrors and windows (Bishop, 1990) would you like to offer them?

    Note: Although the sections of this guide are separated, the authors acknowledge that identity is complex and intersectional, meaning that categories (oppressed or privileged) of race, ethnicity, culture, nationality, gender, social class, disability, sexuality, and age are inextricably linked, shaping children's social identities and impacting their everyday life experiences.
