We distributed surveys to the caregivers who attended the 68 storytime sessions we observed at 35 libraries. A total of 346 caregivers responded. In addition to the question about caregiver’s reasons for storytime attendance, the survey asked caregivers what barriers to attendance they might face as well as how they heard about the storytime program.

We also conducted an online survey of public library directors across the United States which had 698 respondents. Directors used a 5-point scale to rate the relative importance of a given set of storytime objectives, outcomes and outputs, and supports and inputs.
