    Bell (2002) provides a model of mentoring that is easy to remember using the mnemonic SAGE (reflective reach):

    • Surrendering: willing to let go of the process and allow the interactions between mentor and mentee to grow without taking on power and authority in the relationship
    • Accepting: listening to the mentee's ideas and thoughts and acting on them, and embracing the mentee for who they are
    • Gifting: offering advice, wisdom, experience, feedback, focus, and direction without expecting anything in return
    • Extending: pushing oneself beyond what is perceived as the limit, and encouraging the mentee to grow beyond the mentoring relationship

    The Experience of Being a Mentee

    If mentees want to truly benefit from a relationship with mentors, they need to assess themselves honestly. Do they have the willingness to learn from another person and will they be able to accept advice? Success is influenced by attitude, and that will determine the quality and outcomes of the relationship. When supporting new teachers and adult learners, it is helpful for mentor/coaches to be familiar with some recognized stages of educator’s development.
