Name | Current institution and role | 50 words or less describing your involvement in STEM ed reform efforts. | Profile Pic |
Sara Lindsay, NER Leader | University of Maine, School of Marine Sciences & Maine Center for Research in STEM Education; Associate Professor | At UMaine, I co-lead the Maine Faculty Incentive Grants program to involve undergraduate learning assistants in “gateway” courses and serve on the leadership team for the Maine STEM Partnership, a state-wide research-practice partnership. My current research includes working with middle school teachers to a) integrate computer science in STEM curricula, and b) investigate quantitative reasoning in forest science context.
Loretta Brancaccio-Taras | Kingsbourough Community College Professor, Biological Sciences and Director, Center for e-Learning
Samantha Elliott | St. Mary’s College of Maryland; Founding Director, Center for Inclusive Teaching & Learning; Associate Professor of Biology | Inequities in student success started my interest in education research as an ASM Biology Scholar. I support inclusive pedagogy on multiple fronts: as T&L Director and faculty at SMCM; with PULSE, PKAL, ImmunoREACH, and as former JMBE EIC; and through various NSF-funded faculty development projects.
Alix Fink | Longwood University Professor of Biology Associate Provost, Research and Academic Initiatives | ![]() |
|
Joshua Gray | U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Professor and Section Chief of Chemistry | I employ two evidence-based active learning methods in my teaching: Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) for undergraduate chemistry and Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) for Biochemistry Laboratory. I co-developed a V&C-oriented undergraduate Toxicology learning framework published at CourseSource.
Cleo Hughes Darden | Morgan State University, School of Computer Mathematics and Natural Sciences: Chairperson of Department of Biology | As Chair of Dept. of Biology at Morgan State University, the department is currently focusing on improving student success, instructional delivery, and our science curriculum through implementation of V&C Change core concepts and competencies. These focal points are supported by several grants NIH-BUILD, NSF-LSAMP, NSF-S-STEM, AAC&U-TIDES and others | ![]() |
Thomas Jack | Dept. Biological Sciences, Dartmouth College, Professor and Chair | At Dartmouth, I have worked to introduce student-centered pedagogies in my own courses, and to help my colleagues do the same.
Marcy Kelly | Pace University, Professor and Chair of Biology, Faculty Center Teaching and Learning Fellow | As an infectious disease microbiologist by training, I began working in discipline-based education research after joining the inaugural class of the American Society for Microbiology’s (ASM) Biology Scholars Program. I have several peer reviewed publications focusing on classroom interventions in introductory biology courses and have received NSF grant support for assessment of my classroom initiatives. I now serve as a Research Section Editor for ASM’s Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education
Monica Linden | Brown University; Sr. Lecturer in Neuroscience, Provost’s Faculty Teaching Fellow | I am involved in diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in STEM including working on the Departmental Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan Committee for the Brown University Neuroscience Department. I am currently a co-developer and facilitator for Brown’s Seminar for Transformation Around Anti-Racist Teaching (START). Additionally, I received the FUN Carol Ann Potter Educator of the Year Award in 2019, in part for my work supporting diversity and inclusion in my classes
Matthew Marcello | Pace University, Associate Professor of Biology
Fernando Nieto-Fernandez | SUNY Old Westbury, Professor of Biology, Science and Technology Entry Program, Director | A microbial ecologist by training. For the past 20+ years I have been involved in running research training programs for URMs funded by the NIH and NYSED. I use CUREs in Ecology through the Ecological Research as Education Network, and in the freshman biology course through the SEA-PHAGES program from HHMI.
Gina Semprebon | Bay Path University, Professor of Biology, Founding Director of the Center of Excellence for Women in STEM | I teach at a private Women’s University and spend much of my time on attracting and retaining underrepresented women in STEM. I run several faculty learning communities aimed at improving quantitative literacy as well as infusing diversity, equity, and inclusion and anti-racism tenets into our STEM curriculum. I have administered several NSF grants aimed at improving the educational experience and retaining underrepresented women in STEM.
Davida Smyth | The New School, Associate Professor of Natural Sciences | An Associate Professor of Natural Sciences, I research the role of the built environment in driving antibiotic resistance. I also conduct pedagogical research on improving civic and scientific literacy and integrating authentic research into the curriculum success. I am Deputy Director of the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement.
Jackie Washington |
Nyack College Professor and Chair, Dept of Natural Sciences |
At Nyack, I have introduced course-based research experiences for all students in all biology courses. I am a microbiologist by training and am the lead instructor for the HHMI SEA-PHAGES program at our institution. I am an ASM Biology Scholar and HHMI BioInteractive Ambassador.
Michelle Withers |
Binghamton University Associate Professor, Biology and STEM Educator, CLT |
I’m a discipline-based education researcher and I lead the Mobile Summer Institutes on Scientific Teaching (MoSIs) and NSITE, a network of STEM education reform networks joining forces to speed adoption of evidence-based practices.
David Zuzga |
La Salle University Assistant Professor & Chair, Biology School of Arts & Sciences |
