Imagine a world where ideas, goods, people, cultures, and even microbes travel the globe in minutes—where a farmer in Kenya can receive weather forecasts from a satellite orbiting Earth, and a teenager in Brazil attends a virtual concert hosted in South Korea. This interconnectedness, accelerated by transformative technologies, defines the modern epoch: globalization. More than just an economic phenomenon, globalization encompasses historical shifts, technological revolutions, cultural dynamics, environmental challenges, and power relations that bind societies in an intricate web we can call the “global village.”
In this book, we’ll explore the historical evolution of globalization, the role of information technologies, shifting patterns of dependence and interdependence among nations, the celebration and clash of diversity, conflicts and resistance borne of global pressures, and the intertwined social, cultural, economic, political, and environmental dimensions of a world in constant exchange.
By the end of this section, you will be able to:
