1. Is Climate Change Really a “Tragedy of the Commons”?
Hardin's tragedy-of-the-commons model suggests that individuals pursuing their own interests can collectively destroy a shared resource. Ostrom demonstrated that communities can create institutions capable of governing commons successfully.
Which framework better helps explain climate change?
Make a clear claim. Use at least two pieces of evidence or examples from the chapter, explain one limitation of the framework you chose, and respond to a plausible counterargument.
2. Can a Green Transition Still Be Unjust?
Consider one clean-energy technology discussed in this chapter, such as electric vehicles, solar energy, wind power, batteries, or electricity-storage systems.
Can expanding that technology reduce global environmental harm while simultaneously creating environmental injustice in particular communities?
Explain how both outcomes could occur at the same time. Your response should identify at least one benefit, one burden, and one question about political power or decision-making.
3. How Much Environmental Responsibility Belongs to You?
Some environmental campaigns emphasize individual choices such as recycling, consuming less, buying certified products, or choosing lower-carbon transportation. Others emphasize governments, companies, infrastructure, and economic systems.
Where should responsibility primarily lie?
Avoid answering “everyone” without explaining how responsibility should differ. Compare at least three actors, such as consumers, corporations, governments, wealthy states, lower-income states, or international institutions. Defend how responsibility should be distributed and why.
