Given this complexity, how do we make sense of global issues without becoming overwhelmed? One approach is to use analytical lenses. To analyze global problems, scholars often use four overlapping perspectives that help categorize the scale and impact of an issue:
- Intrapersonal: This lens looks at how global issues shape individual identity. For example, how does "climate anxiety" affect the mental health of Gen Z? How does cultural globalization affect the language you speak or the food you crave? The intrapersonal lens focuses on individual experiences. It asks how global phenomena shape identity, perception, and emotion. Climate anxiety, for example, reflects how global environmental changes are internalized at the individual level.
- Interpersonal: This lens examines how interactions across borders shape relationships. Consider the "remittance economy," where migrants send money back to their home countries, creating deep financial and emotional bonds between distant nations. The interpersonal lens examines relationships. Migration, remittances, and transnational families illustrate how global processes create new forms of connection.
- Institutional: This focuses on the rules of the game. How do governments, the UN, and mega-corporations like Amazon create structures that dictate where people can move and what they can buy? The institutional lens shifts attention to structures. Governments, corporations, and international organizations define the rules that shape global interactions.
- Cultural: The cultural lens explores meaning. It examines how ideas, values, and practices are interpreted differently across contexts. The concept of glocalization captures this interplay between global and local influences. This lens explores how values and traditions influence interpretation. Why does a "global" brand like McDonald's look different in India than it does in France? It is the study of "Glocalization" the thick tension between global forces and local cultures.
The lenses should not produce four separate mini-essays, instead, use them together. For any case, ask: What historical pathway created the system? What political institutions make and enforce rules? What economic incentives distribute costs and benefits? What cultural narratives make the arrangement appear natural, desirable, or inevitable? These lenses help us see the impact of global issues, but they also expose the massive gap between the "winners" and "losers" of globalization, leading to a debate on development. These lenses do not simplify global issues. Instead, they provide multiple entry points for understanding them.
