Metaverse Governance
Virtual worlds blur property, identity, and consent.
Who owns digital bodies? How are harassment or labor rights enforced? The EU Digital Services Act now extends content-moderation duties to immersive platforms.
Scholars propose “metaverse citizenship” frameworks combining community self-governance with transnational law (Castronova, 2022).
Biometric Control
Facial, iris, and gait recognition spread rapidly under health-security rationales post-COVID-19. Privacy International (2021) warns these systems normalize mass identification without oversight. Kenya, India, and the EU are drafting moratoria on public-space biometrics pending human-rights impact assessments.
Quantum and Neuro Rights
Chile became the first nation to enshrine neuro-rights (Law 21.383, 2021), protecting mental privacy from brain-computer interfaces.
As quantum computing threatens current encryption, human-rights advocates push for “post-quantum privacy” protocols to preserve security in the next digital era (Mosca, 2018).
The challenge is not technology itself but governance aligned with dignity. Amartya Sen’s (1999) capabilities approach reminds us that progress must expand real freedoms: agency, voice, and participation. Shoshana Zuboff (2023) urges reclaiming digital infrastructures as democratic commons. Experiments with cooperative platforms (platform co-ops) show alternative ownership is possible, where users share profits and decisions (Scholz, 2016).
Ultimately, defending human freedoms online requires combining technical literacy, ethical imagination, and political will. The same triad that sustained past democratic revolutions.
