Aid Trap A cycle in which repeated external assistance substitutes for structural reform and undermines domestic accountability and growth dynamics (Moyo, 2009).
Participatory Grantmaking A funding approach that gives decision power to affected communities across proposal design, selection, and evaluation, redistributing authority in the grant process.
Democratic Deficit The gap that arises when private philanthropies shape public goods without proportional transparency, oversight, or electoral accountability (Reich, 2018).
Decolonizing Aid A practice agenda to shift resources, narrative authority, and leadership to local actors, and to align philanthropy with rights, equity, and systemic change.
Attention Economy of Aid The way digital platforms allocate visibility and emotional engagement, influencing which crises receive donations and which remain unseen (Morozov, 2013).
Donor-Advised Fund A charitable giving vehicle offering immediate tax benefits while allowing donors to recommend grants over time, often with limited payout requirements.
Complementarity A partnership principle in which philanthropy funds innovation and flexible capital while public systems deliver universal services and long-term finance (UN, 2015).
Effective Altruism An evidence-based approach to giving that seeks to maximize positive impact per dollar, often prioritizing measurable outcomes such as lives saved (Singer, 2015).
