Cultural appreciation emerges when exchange occurs through dialogue and collaboration. Cultural appropriation arises when power imbalances remain unacknowledged.As global citizens, the challenge lies in moving beyond passive consumption toward conscious participation. Every meal shared, garment worn, or song streamed becomes an opportunity to recognize the stories behind cultural creativity. By engaging ethically with global culture, individuals contribute to a world where diversity thrives not as a commodity but as a shared human experience.
Expanding the Role of the Global Citizen
To live within a global cultural ecosystem is to participate in ongoing processes of exchange, interpretation, and responsibility. Cultural globalization is not something that happens “out there.” It is something individuals actively shape through everyday choices.
Students are not passive observers of globalization. They are participants whose decisions influence which cultural forms are sustained, amplified, or marginalized. This perspective reframes globalization from an abstract concept into a set of ethical practices.
The challenge moving forward is not to avoid cultural exchange, but to engage with it thoughtfully. This requires curiosity, humility, and a willingness to confront uncomfortable questions about power and inequality. By approaching cultural globalization with critical awareness, individuals can contribute to a more equitable and inclusive global cultural landscape.
