    Why Wait?

    Minimizing waiting time is an effective strategy for managing behavior in a toddler classroom, and this is where the concept of primary care groups [1] [2] proves especially beneficial. In a scenario with 12 toddlers, all three caregivers do not need to manage children simultaneously. Instead, dividing the toddlers into smaller primary care groups can significantly reduce waiting time and associated behavioral issues.

    organizing children into smaller, manageable groups, each supervised by a specific caregiver. This approach allows for more personalized attention and efficient management of tasks such as feeding, changing, or getting dressed for outdoor activities.

    For example, if each primary caregiver is responsible for a small group of toddlers, they can focus on getting their group ready for an activity, such as going outside. This approach allows for more individualized attention and quicker preparation, as each caregiver only has to assist a few toddlers with tasks like hand washing, putting on jackets, and getting ready to go outside.

    Without this division into smaller groups, toddlers who are ready first would have to wait for the others, which can lead to various behavioral challenges. Toddlers may become restless, attempt to go outside independently, engage in pushing or other disruptive behaviors, or even start removing their jackets out of frustration or impatience. These behaviors are often a result of having to wait for an extended period, which can be challenging for young children.

    Therefore, reducing waiting time by using primary care groups makes the logistical process more efficient and helps prevent discipline issues arising from excessive waiting. It enables a more structured and calm transition for activities, catering to the developmental needs of toddlers and ensuring a smoother day-to-day operation in the classroom [1].
