- Positive feedback should extend beyond moments of obedience to include recognition of empathy and understanding. For example, if a child hits another but then shows empathy by comforting them, it's important to acknowledge this empathetic behavior. Understanding that actions like hitting or biting cause pain to others is a complex concept for toddlers. They need to learn that they refrain from such actions not because they feel hurt but because they hurt someone else.
- Give attention before the child demands it. If a child feels neglected, they might resort to negative actions like biting or throwing items to gain attention. Disruptive actions, especially around nap time, can indicate unmet needs for attention or connection.
- In cases where you find yourself feeling negatively towards a child, perhaps due to their challenging behavior, make an effort to understand and appreciate their positive qualities. Finding something likable in each child can positively influence how we respond to them, fostering a more nurturing and effective environment[1].
