    Guidance in Family Childcare

    Children in a family childcare setting tend to act like siblings with one another. And since there is a wide range of ages the provider can utilize this to their advantage. Having the older children as the experts! Consistency is key and allowing leadership skills to shine while facilitating the growth and development of all in care. 

    Children are bound to want the same toy at the same time. It is how you manage the situation that lays the foundation of expectations. The provider decides how they will handle conflict by empowering children to be a part of the solution. Infants and toddlers may not have the verbal skills to explain what they want or need. The provider may need to be their voice and model for all children involved. It could look something like this, “I can see you both want to use the truck. They are fun to roll back and forth. I wonder if we can find more of them over here to use so everyone can have one?” or “I can see that Julia had the truck and you are wanting to use it as well. What can we do about that? (Wait for a response and if there isn’t one shared then you might ask…) I wonder if you can ask Julia how many minutes she needs with the truck or if when she is done, she can give it to you? Which question would you like to ask?”
