Academic Skills Application: Study & Memory Techniques

Academic skills including study and memory techniques are explained in depth in the Academic Success Strategies chapter of this OER textbook. We’re going to use the content of this chapter to practice self-testing by creating a set of questions to be used as a practice quiz.

Please review this chapter and look for the headings and subheadings. For example, the first heading in the chapter is “2.1 Personal Responsibility.” Use “who, what, where, when, why or how” to turn each heading into a question.

List your questions for each heading below:

    2.1 =

    2.2 =

    2.3 =

    2.4 =

    2.5 =

Now transfer those questions to note cards. Review your notes or look back through this chapter to write the answers to each question on the opposite side of the notecard from the question. You could use paper notecards or a flash card app such as Quizlet or Knowt to create your questions. Read each question and answer set once then set them aside for a few hours or up to one day. Test yourself by reading the questions and answering in your own head or aloud before turning over the card to check your answer. Follow this procedure every day or every other day for at least four days before taking a quiz or test on this topic.
